A single glass of wine per vine: that is the ideal yield when making a Sauternes wine, thanks to a very painstaking selection of grapes. In our impatient, money-obsessed times, that might appear extravagant. A unique elixir, «drunk light,» as Frédéric Dard described it, Sauternes is today weakened by the reduction in dedicated vineyard plots, in favor of dry white […]
The purpose of this site is to inform everyone who wishes to learn more about the oldest family-owned estate in the Sauternes appellation (and probably in all Bordeaux). The website www.winesearcher.com makes it possible to see who sells Fargues internationally. You will notice that the château’s average annual production of twenty thousand bottles is distributed all over the world thanks to […]
The 2015 harvest at Château de Fargues began early Friday, September 11. The sublime 2007 had begun on that date. Auspicious ? Time will tell. This great summer gave us beautiful golden and mellow berries, from late August onwards. The richness of these first noble rotted berries, once sorted, strengthens our hopes. This first generation of botrytis, although of course […]
Seasonal work: burning the vine shoots on a parcel recently acquired which is under observation. It will soon be uprooted, we will install a drainage and the ground will receive a generous addition of manure. Replanting with our rootstocks and clones of Sémillon and Sauvignon will follow.
A cold, wet spring saved by a beautiful summer Growing season and vine development After a cool, very wet winter and spring, the temperature rose to 30°C in the shade on the 17th of April. However, this was quickly forgotten when there was a frost alert on the 28th, with the thermometer reading just one small degree above freezing […]

Sauternes is a magical wine for me. I consider wine […]
Ten years ago, when the board of Château d’Yquem fired him, president and former owner Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces was expected to fade into the Sauternes sunset. Instead, Lur Saluces picked himself up off the mat. The 80-year-old aristocrat continues making great Sauternes a few miles away at his Château de Fargues. Here, since 2005, he has produced seven wines […]
A private event was held at Château de Fargues at the end of Vinexpo 2013 – a magnificent sound and light show – to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the first vintage ever bottled at the château. The many guests enjoyed the opportunity to discover or rediscover the fortress and the progress made in renovating it. You are welcome to […]
Château de Fargues was present in Versailles on 9th June 2013 at a dinner given in honour of Giuseppe Penone. His contemporary art was displayed at the Château de Versailles, which was at the time commemorating the 400th anniversary of the birth of André Le Nôtre, designer of the famous gardens there. Inspiring visitors to reflect on nature’s refinement and […]
J-R Pitte, professor of geography at the Sorbonne, former President of the Sorbonne, President of the Académie du Vin de France, and a lover of fine food and wine, showed us how a complex terroir can benefit from talented, inventive management by true enthusiasts… He cites Château de Fargues as an example. After London, Tokyo, and New York, the 4th Botrytis Forum took place in September 2012 at the Hotel Icon in Hong Kong. Some 150 journalists, trade professionals, and wine enthusiasts attended a tutored tasting of great wines made thanks to the mysterious noble rot.
To begin with, the work that has now been finished simply set out to make it possible to visit the monument in complete safety. That goal having been achieved, another took its place… There was a huge temptation to install a roof on walls that had not seen one for over three centuries and to replace the beams long disappeared […]
