The 1989 vintage

A truly exceptional vintage, with great ageing potential.

WEATHER DURING THE GROWING SEASON

A rainy spring followed a drought period that had lasted since the previous summer. Early bud burst brought about flowering in late May, a fortnight earlier than usual. The very warm, dry summer was marked by a surprisingly violent hailstorm on July 6th. The grapes ripened in early September and contained a high level of sugar (14% potential alcohol before botyrtisation).

HARVEST

Botrytis spread very quickly on these overripe grapes and the first wave of picking started on September 27th. Sorting was very meticulous in order to remove any grapes adversely affected by insect pests. Ideal weather was conducive to three more excellent waves of picking, and harvesting finished on October 25th.

NOTES ET CRITIQUES DÉGUSTATION>
Tasting notes

Deep, bright golden colour. Very complex nose of citrus, spice, mint, and hazelnut. This wine is rich and soft on the palate, with a great deal of vinosity. It has a very long aftertaste of honey and candied citrus peel. A really outstanding vintage with great ageing potential.

Château de Fargues - 2017
17,5/20

"[...] A very fat wine, full of pepper, long with an iodized bitterness that gives so much to the wine and counterbalances the exuberant fruity side (we go as far as pineapple) and candied, not to mention the citrus touches. "

Chambertin – Week-End – 21/01/1994

« Deep lucid gold colour. The palate is bursting full of oranges, tangerines and apricots. Very well defined on the palate with fine acidity, quite a bold wine, very rich and opulent with delicious toffee finish. Superb. »
