The Château de Fargues label has several unique features: it is printed on banknote-style paper, with a distinctive font. Since the 1984 vintage, the label has featured a watermark representing the Lur Saluces family coat of arms. To enable it to be assessed, the paper is sprinkled with particles of different shapes and colours, depending on the manufacturing process, which only become visible under ultraviolet light.
From 1943 to 1999, the Fargues bottle had a single label, bearing the crown, the words ‘Château de Fargues’, ‘Lur Saluces’, “Sauternes”, the vintage, as well as the words ‘bottled at the château’ and the compulsory legal information that had appeared over the years. From 2000 to 2003, the label was simplified by removing the legal information, which was moved to a strip below the label, slightly detached from it. Since 2004, the legal information has been located on the back of the bottle, on a transparent back label with gold ink.
To highlight its unique character, Château de Fargues has redesigned its label to reflect the history of the estate and the importance of the Lur Saluces family in making Sauternes wine. The 2014 vintage marks the inauguration of this new look. The crown of the Marquisat de Saluces is now in blue, as it was on the first bottles. The signature ‘Lur Saluces’, inspired by those found in the estate’s archives, is featured prominently above the name of the château, symbolising excellence and obstinacy in the pursuit of quality.
Each cork is selected for its optimum quality. They come in specific lengths: 54 x 24 mm for bottles and 45 x 24 mm for half-bottles. This large size makes it very difficult to extract without damaging it. What’s more, it is perfectly applied to the inside of the neck, to which it adheres strongly. Each cap has a ‘mirror’ end on the liquid side and a crown stamp on the other side.
They all bear the vintage mark, the ‘Château de Fargues’ brand and the imprint of the crown on the roll.
The cap is made of pewter, in the brand’s colours (gold and yellow). The words ‘bottled at the château’ are written on the band at the top of the skirt (in red). The Château de Fargues coat of arms adorns the head of the capsule (the vintage was printed on it until the 1970s). To prevent counterfeiting, the cap tears if you try to bend it to remove it.
The bottle is extra white like the Grand Vin of the brand Véralia for the last vintages.
THE LABEL The Château de Fargues label has several unique features: it is printed on banknote-style paper, with a distinctive font.
